BACKGROUND
"It was on a camping trip in November 2018 that this piece came to life. We arrived at the Neranie campsite in the Myall Lakes district of New South Wales tired after a day of canoeing but with souls that were soon to be revived by the serenity of this scene and scape. As the sun was setting, I sat near the lake with pencil and paper notating the bird calls I could hear. A glorious chorus then woke us the next morning and I grabbed my phone to make a quick recording. My ear was constantly drawn to a second inversion A Major triad being sung by the birds, and this motif was to become my thoughtful distraction as we set out for a day-long hike through the bush and dunes."
"As I walked, I pondered what life might be like as a bird - and what lessons I could apply from their worry-free approach to life. My mind wandered also to the first inhabitants of this beautiful area - the Worimi people, and how happy their hearts must have been living peacefully in a place like this before colonisation. One observer in the 1800’s described these first Australians as 'more prone to laughter than tears'."
"As a result of my time at Neranie I was freshly inspired to ‘consider’ and ‘ponder’ both the birds and the Worimi people's way of life. I am better for both their examples."
